A safety barrier does not warn you when it dies. It stays there, installed, looking fine, until the day you call on it and it does not answer. The proof test is the only thing that forces it to prove it is still alive.
A proof test is the periodic verification that a complete safety function (sensor, logic and final element) still does what it should. It is not checking that the equipment «is there». It is confirming that, faced with the dangerous condition, it actually acts.
Why a barrier degrades in silence
The dangerous failures of a safety system are almost never visible: a valve that sticks, a sensor that drifts, a logic left in bypass. They do not affect normal operation, so no one notices them. They pile up in silence. It is like your car’s airbag: you carry it for years without knowing whether it works, and you only find out in the crash, when there is no second chance. The proof test is crashing on purpose, under controlled conditions, to know beforehand.
On the day the barrier did not act, it had almost always been failed for a long time. No one knew, because no one had tested it.
A test that works, not one that gets signed
A proof test is worth something when it tests the full function down to the final element, not just the sensor; when it is done at the interval the SIL demands, not when there is time; and when what fails is fixed and recorded, not noted and forgotten. Testing half the barrier and signing for the rest is worse than not testing: it leaves you confident in something you did not verify. Integrity is not declared once: it is sustained test after test.
Ask about your critical functions: when was the last one tested, in full, down to the valve? If the answer does not exist or is uncomfortable, there is a barrier that may no longer be there. Planning and recording those tests, traceable and auditable, is done with PhiaExpert.
