Trusting your life to a single H2S detector is trusting the gas to appear exactly where that detector is looking. H2S does not play fair: that is why detection is thought of in layers.
There are three types of H2S detection and they do not compete: they complement each other. The personal monitor, the fixed detector and the area monitor. Understanding what each one does (and where it leaves you alone) is what separates a detection program from a false sense of security.
Three detectors, three blind spots
The personal monitor goes with you and measures the air you breathe: it is your last line, but it only covers the air around you and depends on being switched on and calibrated. The fixed detector watches a critical point 24 hours a day (a compressor, a pump) and triggers plant alarms, but it does not follow you when you move. The area monitor is portable and covers a temporary work zone, ideal for a turnaround or a one-off job, but you have to place it well or it watches nothing. It is like home security: the door alarm, the motion sensor and the one in your pocket cover different things. Remove one and you leave a gap.
Most exposures do not happen for lack of detectors: they happen at the exact point no detector was covering.
The judgment: layers that cover each other
A good program does not pick one detector: it combines them by risk. Fixed where H2S always accumulates, area where the work changes, and personal on every exposed person, always. And all three with the same thing: calibration up to date, alarms with a clear plan for what to do when they sound, and a record that they actually work. A detector with no maintenance is not a barrier: it is an ornament that beeps.
